Technology and Restaurants: Improving the Dining Experience

Picture
The food service and hospitality industries aren’t usually the first to come to mind when you think about the use of groundbreaking technology. After all, these two industries are based almost entirely on providing their services with a personal touch.

But, both of these industries are exceptionally competitive. Restaurant owners around the country are always trying to figure out ways to get the competitive advantage. According to the National Restaurant Association, technology beats out just about everything else in this regard. In fact, in a recent study conducted by the Association, 73% of restaurant operators believe that technology not only gives them a competitive advantage, it even makes a restaurant more profitable.

How Do Restaurants Utilize Technology?

While restaurants will always need humans to prepare and serve their dishes, technology is utilized throughout just about every other facet of the industry. For instance, today’s restaurants use advanced payment options like point-of-sale payment processing so they can offer their patrons alternative ways to pay. They also use geo-tagged marketing for location-specific online advertising.

From timekeeping and tracking software to web-based inventory monitoring and ordering applications to food waste monitoring software, modern restaurants also use technology to help streamline operations. And, of course, when it comes to satisfying customers, restaurants rely on advanced audio and video systems to deliver a multi-sensory dining experience.

Technology’s Impact on the Hospitality Industry

Despite many advances in hospitality technology, it remains a young, but burgeoning, industry. But, as technology continues to positively impact efficiency and profit-potential, as well as the customer experience, you can expect it to continue growing. And, data collected by the National Restaurant Association supports that claim. Here are some of the facts that the survey uncovered:

  • 41% of diners would use a self-service ordering terminal if available
  • 39% of diners would use an electronic ordering system, including iPad menus and wine lists if available
  • 36% of diners have placed online orders before
  • 82% of restaurants believe that online and smartphone ordering will become more popular
  • 52% of diners would use an electronic payment system if available
  • 55% of restaurants say electronic payment systems are becoming more popular

Another way technology plays a role in a restaurant’s success is through the use of social media. Social media is so powerful in this industry that nine out of ten restaurants say social media is one their most important marketing tools. And, 95% of restaurants say they are/will be on Facebook and 78% on Twitter within the next two years.

Currently, three out of ten diners use social media to choose a restaurant. That same percentage has also viewed or posted restaurant reviews on sites like Yelp.com and others.
